Location and classification
Karlskopf is an officially registered single-vineyard site in the Ahr wine-growing region Ahr, the Walporzheim/Ahrtal area and the Großlage Klosterberg. The site is located in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, in the Ahrweiler cadastral district, and bears the wine-growing location code 110109.
Area and topography
For the 2024 harvest year, 10.5 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded. The Bachemer Karlskopf faces west to north-west and has steep to sloping slopes at an altitude of approximately 120 to 180 metres above sea level.
Soils and grape varieties
The soils consist primarily of loess loam; in addition, loam as well as slightly stony sandy loam are described. For the Bachemer Karlskopf, around 4 hectares of Spätburgunder, 4 hectares of Frühburgunder, 1 hectare of Portugieser and 1 hectare of Müller-Thurgau are documented. Frühburgunder is regarded as the characteristic grape variety of the site.
Viticulture and wine style
The wines of the Bachemer Karlskopf are described as aromatic and full-bodied; the site is considered a typical Frühburgunder location in the Ahr. Owing to the steep slopes and the close spacing of the rows, vineyard work in the Ahr valley is carried out predominantly by hand, while machines are used only to a limited extent.
