Location and classification
Kardinalsberg is a registered single vineyard in the Kues district of Bernkastel-Kues in the Bernkastel area of the Mosel winegrowing region. The site extends along the left bank of the Moselle below the Kueser plateau. In the official vineyard directory 2024, 49.5 hectares of planted vineyard area are listed for the Kues cadastral district. Kardinalsberg belongs to the Großlage Kurfürstlay.
Relief and microclimate
The vineyards follow numerous indentations and are predominantly oriented from south to south-east. Wooded areas in the vicinity provide protection for the local vineyard microclimate.
Soil and vineyard plots
The site is characterised by weathered Devonian slate; in parts of the vineyards, solid rock is exposed at the surface. A documented experimental plot has a poor, weathered slate soil and a slope gradient of 35 to 40 percent. It comprises two areas of 4,101 and 5,533 square metres with 40 and 32 vine rows respectively. The site planted in 1991 has a row spacing of 2.0 metres and a vine spacing of 1.2 metres.
Grape variety and wine
At Kardinalsberg, Riesling is documented; local winemakers describe the site as being predominantly planted with Riesling. A documented wine from the site is a dry Riesling Spätlese from the 2020 vintage.
