Location and topography
The Kapellenberg lies above Eichelberg, a district of Östringen, in the wine-growing region Baden and in the Kraichgau. The vineyard site, which faces south-southeast, is at around 220 to 300 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 65 percent. It lies on a high ridge, the summit of which is covered by mixed beech and oak woodland.
Soil and vineyard area
The vineyard soil consists of calcareous Stubensandstein (limestone-bearing sandstone) with volcanic material. The high proportion of sandstone is described as the cause of a very poor, nutrient-limited soil. The area classified by the VDP covers 6.96 hectares.
History and name
The Kapellenberg was already used for wine-growing in Roman times and was regarded by the Benedictines of the monastery of Wigoldesberg as an important vineyard site. The name refers to the Michaelskapelle at the highest point of the vineyard, the construction of which the VDP dates to 1748.
Grape variety and classification
Riesling is given as the classified grape variety. With the Kapellenberg and Eichelberg, the VDP lists the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. With it are associated Riesling wines, including a Riesling VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS produced by Burg Ravensburg.
