Location and landscape
The Kapellenberg is a vineyard site above Odernheim am Glan in the wine-growing region Nahe. The amphitheatre-like steep slope comprises around six hectares and lies high above the fog line.
Soils and grape varieties
The soils include sandstone weathering, areas influenced by slate, and zones with volcanic melaphyre rock. For this site, Frühburgunder and Grauburgunder have been documented. In deeper layers of soil, Spätburgunder also grows; Weißburgunder and Gewürztraminer are also associated with the Kapellenberg. Some Grauburgunder vines are up to around 50 years old.
Wine style and maturation
The deeper soil layers are associated with robust Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder, while other areas produce elegant Grauburgunder. A Kapellenberg Grauburgunder is made dry, matured in wood, and described as full-bodied as well as mineral and piquant.
Name and classification
The name of the site goes back to a side chapel of the monastery of Disibodenberg. In the vineyard directory for Rhineland-Palatinate, the Kapellenberg is listed as a vineyard site in Odernheim am Glan.
