Location and classification
The Kapellenberg, locally known as Erzinger Kapellenberg, lies above Erzingen in the municipality of Klettgau in the wine-growing region of Baden. The single-vineyard site belongs to the Lake Constance area and extends to about 500 metres above sea level.
Soils
The site is characterised by black Jura geology with heavy, loessy clay loam. The geological profile also indicates Opalinus clay from the Middle Jura and formations of the Lower Jura, from a period of around 200 to 157 million years.
Grape varieties and wine styles
At the Kapellenberg, Pinot Noir is grown above all, alongside Müller-Thurgau. The documented vineyard areas include 13 hectares of Pinot Noir and 1.5 hectares of Müller-Thurgau. The site is particularly associated with Pinot Noir red wine as well as Pinot Noir rosé, Weißherbst and Müller-Thurgau wines. For the 2024 vintage, fine and fruity wines were expected.
History and cultivation
Winegrowing in Erzingen and Rechberg is documented locally as far back as Roman times. The hill chapel above the vineyard is the namesake; it was built in 1946. The grapes of the Erzingen winemakers’ cooperative are harvested exclusively by hand and are developed in the Badischer Winzerkeller in Breisach into varietal-typical wines.
