Location and classification
Kapellenberg is an officially listed single vineyard site in the cadastral district of Fürfeld. It belongs to the Bingen area and to the Großlage Rheingrafenstein in Rheinhessen.
Soil
The site classified as Rotliegend/Rigosol was formed from calcareous clay and fine sand deposits from the upper Rotliegend desert landscape. The soil is shallow to medium-depth, calcareous and stony, with clayey loam, low plant-available water storage, good warming capacity and medium root penetration.
Wine character and history
With the soil, herbal, finely spiced and almost floral notes are associated, along with mineral components and fruit aromas of peach, apricot and honeydew melon. A lively acidity shapes the style; in youth the wines can feel closed, before they develop with long ageing potential. The name of the wine site refers to the Templars’ chapel at Hof Iben.
