Location and classification
The Leistadter Kalkofen is a vineyard site in Bad Dürkheim in the Pfalz. The high-lying, very cool site is located on a high plateau at around 230 to 240 metres above sea level and is oriented towards the south-east. The VDP classifies it as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
Soils and landscape
The soils consist of limestone with a loamy topsoil layer. Within the site lies the distinctive limestone reef Felsenberg, which is said to originate from an earlier tropical sea. According to tourist information, the area comprises around 30.4 hectares; the area classified by the VDP covers 26.19 hectares.
Vines and cultivation
As the classified grape variety, Spätburgunder is listed. Riesling is considered suitable for the cool conditions; in addition, mixed planting with Sylvaner, Riesling and Traminer is described. The site consists of small parcels with numerous small pieces of limestone and has been preserved without land consolidation.
Wines and name
The Rieslings from the Leistadter Kalkofen are associated with a gentle acidity. A Spätburgunder from the site is described as elegant and delicate. For this wine, among other things, hand harvesting, a second sorting, fermentation with natural yeasts in wooden vessels, as well as ageing in French barriques are mentioned. The name Kalkofen refers to the former firing of white limestone to produce lime.
