Location and context
The Kalkgasse is a single vineyard site in Bensheim in the Starkenburg area of the winegrowing region Hessische Bergstraße. Under wine law, it is assigned to the large site of Bensheimer Wolfsmagen. The vineyard area was redesigned through land consolidation.
Name and history
The name refers to the chalk-rich soil of the site. Up until the 20th century, lime was extracted there. The Bensheim field name is attested in 1211 as „in Calcgazzen“; vineyards at this location appear in 1422 as „in der Calckgassen“.
Grape varieties and wines
Plantings or wines from the Kalkgasse are documented as Riesling, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Rotberger, Dornfelder and Chardonnay. Among others, dry Weissburgunder, dry Grauburgunder, dry Riesling Kabinett and delicately off-dry Rotberger rosé are attested.
Use of Chardonnay
A Chardonnay parcel of the Kalkgasse is used by the Weingut of the City of Bensheim to produce base wine for sparkling wine.
