Location and Soils
The Kaiserberg is a single vineyard site in the Nußdorf district of Landau in the Pfalz, south of the village of Nußdorf. The vineyard site is on a south-facing slope. For the Nußdorfer Kaiserberg, calcareous marl and loess soils are documented.
Single Vineyard Site and Vineyard Area
In the Pfalz wine-growing region, the Kaiserberg is assigned to the area Südliche Weinstraße and the Großlage Bischofskreuz. The official wine-growing site identifier is 810113; the designated vineyard area is 36.9 hectares.
Grape Varieties and History
The documented plantings at the Nußdorfer Kaiserberg include Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder. A 2,700-square-metre plot within the Kaiserberg site area, Landauer Hochzeitswingert, is planted with Auxerrois. A local historical account names for the Nußdorf area a holding of the Salian emperors Heinrich III. and Heinrich IV. in the 11th and 12th centuries.
Cultivation and Production
Villa Hochdörffer describes the Kaiserberg as the location of its oldest vines and the first vineyard planted jointly by Hans and Lieselotte Hochdörffer. For its Kaiserberg wines, the winery describes extensive manual work, selective picking, reduced yields and slow, gentle ripening. In the cellar, gentle treatment, gravity-based movement, natural yeasts and an extended ripening period are used.
