Site and Topography
The Jungfer is the Hallgartener Jungfer, east of Hallgarten in the municipality Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau. It lies in a small hollow at about 200 metres above sea level and has a comparatively gentle slope of 5 to 10 per cent. Its aspect ranges from south-east via south to south-west.
Soil and Climate
The location in a hollow provides protection from wind. The aspect and the quartzite-influenced soils favour the absorption of warmth during the day and the release of warmth at night. The soils consist of gravelly-sandy quartzite with loess-clay components.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
Riesling is listed as the classified grape variety for the Jungfer. The character of the region links the site with fresh Riesling wines that are mineral in character and show both substance and elegance.
Name and Classification
The name Jungfer is probably connected with Cistercian monks from the nearby monastery of Eberbach, who dedicated the vineyard to the Virgin Mary. In the Hessian register of wine sites, Jungfer is assigned as a single site (Einzellage) in the Rheingau Hallgarten growing area. The VDP lists JUNGFER, Hallgarten, as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; this classification is a VDP classification and not a statutory designation of wine site.
