Location and Classification
The Thüngersheimer Johannisberg is a vineyard site in the Franconian wine-growing region near Thüngersheim. The classified area covers 73.00 hectares. In the VDP, the site is listed as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
Climate and Topography
The site is located in the low-rain Maintal valley, with a Mediterranean microclimate described by the local winemakers’ association. The exposure ranges from south-west to south-south-east, with an elevation of around 190 to 220 metres above sea level. The slope gradient is 15 to 55 percent.
Soils and Geological Structure
The documented soils consist of Upper Keuper? and Lower Muschelkalk. The Johannisberg belongs to the Thüngersheim Saddle, where Buntsandstein is exposed through the overlying Muschelkalk layers. In the historic area known as Rothlauf, the soils are described as locally stony and low in nutrients.
Grape Varieties and Viticulture
For this site, Silvaner, Scheurebe, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Spätburgunder are recorded. Documented wines include dry Silvaner and Spätburgunder wines. The land consolidation (Flurbereinigung) of the Johannisberg and Scharlachberg areas was ordered in 1964; in 1970, newly planted vine plantings and erosion-related damage caused by hail were documented there.
