Location and Classification
The Johannisberg is located in Aspisheim in the Bingen sub-region of Rheinhessen. It is assigned both to the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle and to the single vineyard Johannisberg.
Topography
The wine-growing site covers 110 hectares, lies at around 180 to 260 metres above sea level and is oriented from the north-west to the west.
Soils and Wine Style
Documented are marl-/pelosol soils from calcareous clay deposits of the Tertiary Sea. They are deep-rooted, rich in nutrients and strongly calcareous; at the same time they are moderately warm and difficult for roots to penetrate. The wines associated with this show a lot of body, moderate acidity, ripe fruit and comparatively little noticeable mineral character.
In addition, sandy/regosol soils from tertiary coastal sands, gravels and rubble occur. They are gravel-rich, loamy, well aerated, weakly calcareous and relatively warm, but offer roots only limited space. The wines produced from these develop early, show a lively acidity and fruit, and are comparatively light and accessible.
Name
The name of the wine-growing site is traced back to the former ownership of the Mainz town monastery of St. Johannes.
