Location and classification
The Jesuitengarten is a vineyard site on the northern edge of Forst in Pfalz. It lies between the sites of Pechstein and Kirchenstück. The classified area under vine covers 6.85 hectares.
Terrain and soils
The site, which faces east, has a slope of about 4 to 7 per cent and altitudes of approximately 100 to 145 metres above sea level. The terrain rises gently towards the west. Documented soil components include sandy loam, sandy loam with limestone rubble, sandstone gravel, basalt and, respectively, basalt weathering, as well as humus in places. Dense layers of clay and sand are associated with water retention and mineral uptake.
Grape varieties and wine style
Only Riesling is grown in the Jesuitengarten. The Rieslings from this site are described as combining fruit with a mineral character. A documented vintage from 2017 was produced as a dry Riesling Kabinett.
History and classification
The name Jesuitengarten refers to the former holdings of Jesuit monasteries; for the year 1764, land belonging to a Jesuit order in Forst is documented. In the Bavarian classification of wine sites from 1828, the site received the second-highest rating. Today, it is classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in Pfalz.
