Location and Extent
The Jesuit Garden is a vineyard site in the Marienthal district of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. It stretches from Marienthal in the direction of the rock formation Bunte Kuh near Walporzheim. As a single site, the Jesuit Garden is assigned to the Marienthal single larger site Klosterberg.
Relief and Soil
The site is located in a narrow valley bounded by steep slopes. Its aspect ranges from south-west to south-east, with an altitude of about 110 to 250 metres above sea level. Predominant is weathered greywacke; at the foot of the slope, partly colluvial material and loess loam are found.
Climate and Viticulture
Because of the surrounding mountains, the valley floor receives no direct sunlight for about two to three winter months. The designated area covers approximately 12 hectares, of which at the time of the local description about 7 hectares were planted. Around 6 hectares are given over to Spätburgunder and 1 hectare to Portugieser.
Wine Style and Name
The Jesuit Garden is associated with powerful red wines; wines from the upper area are described as more acidity-driven and elegant. The name goes back to the Jesuit courtyard in Wadenheim, which today belongs to Bad Neuenahr and was once the property of the Jesuit establishment in Münstereifel in this region.
