Location and Geography
The Jesuitengarten is a classified wine-growing site at the edge of the town of Forst in the wine-growing region of Pfalz. The area managed by the VDP comprises 6.85 hectares. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 100 to 145 metres and have a slope of four to seven percent. The exposures range from east via east-west to south-east.
Climate and Soils
The site, which faces east, warms up quickly in the mornings thanks to its basalt content. In the evenings, a wind blowing from west to east cools and dries the vines. Documented soils include sandy loam, rubble of red sandstone, marl clay and basalt, as well as calcareous clay, limestone rubble and humus in parts.
Grape Variety and Wine Character
Riesling is the only classified grape variety of the Jesuitengarten, which is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The Rieslings from this site are described as fine and elegant, with a harmonious interplay of fruit and mineral notes. Producer descriptions cite a dry style with a mineral character, ripe acidity and concentrated fruit; at Von Winning, notes of yellow stone fruit and herbaceous spiciness are highlighted. The use of oak shows up there in a slight smoky note.
History
The name goes back to earlier holdings of a Jesuit monastery. In the Bavarian wine-growing site classification of 1828, the Jesuitengarten received the second-highest rating.
