Location and aspect
The Inner Leiste is located in Würzburg, below the Marienberg Fortress, on the long, south-facing slope of the Marienberg, and runs parallel to the Leistenstraße. The south-facing position lies at approximately 190 to 270 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 20 to 65 per cent. For the parcels of the State Wine Cellar (Staatlicher Hofkeller), a south to south-west aspect with a gradient of 25 to 45 per cent is described.
Climate and soil
The site climate is shaped by the hot bowl-like location of Würzburg and intensive sunshine. Limestone-rich, clayey Muschelkalk stores heat and contributes to the microclimate. Geologically, the profile extends from the Lower through to the Middle Muschelkalk and has a high active-lime content.
Viticulture and wine style
The classified vineyard area comprises 11.47 hectares. The classified grape varieties listed are Silvaner and Riesling. Wines from this site are associated with aromas of ripe or yellow fruit, distinctive and/or spicy flavour notes, fine acidity and a creamy style with a finely textured character.
Name and classification
The name Leiste is derived from Lehne or Leite and denotes a long, stretched slope or a site on a hillside. Würzburg’s Inner Leiste is classified in the Franconian winegrowing region as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
