Location and classification
Hunnenstein is an officially registered vineyard site in the Alkener municipal and cadastral district in the wine-growing region Mosel. It belongs to the Burg Cochem area and to the larger site Weinhex, and has the official site number 440503. The 2024 vineyard directory records a planted area of 2.2 hectares.
Topography and soils
The steep slopes are spread across old terraces and newer vineyard structures. Red quartzites and sandstones, as well as blue, grey and reddish slates, are described. Local winegrowers also refer to the soil as weathered slate.
Cultivation and grape varieties
The documented training systems include the traditional single-post training on terraces and a younger modern wire trellis system. A planting specific to the operation in the Alkener Hunnenstein consists of more than 90 percent Riesling and 10 percent Spätburgunder. For the vineyard sites in Alken, including Hunnenstein, Kerner and Dornfelder are also mentioned.
Wine style and designation
An documented wine from Hunnenstein is a Riesling Beerenauslese with the taste indication edelsüß (noble-sweet). The official classification of vineyard sites lists Hunnenstein as a single site; the site name may be used on wines in compliance with the German labelling regulations.
