Location
Hubberg is a named vineyard site in the northern part of the municipal area of Weinheim on the Badische Bergstraße in Baden.
Geological background
Geological investigations indicate that at Hubberg there are Oligocene deposits with coarse beach gravels. These overlie older rocks, shaped by faults, in connection with the structure of the Upper Rhine Graben.
History and viticulture
Towards the end of the 16th century, the Teutonic Order owned around 8.5 morgen of vineyard at Hubberg. Hubberg belonged to the areas of vineyards that remained after the strong decline in Weinheim’s vineyard area around 1900; later urban development reduced part of these areas. A Riesling from Hubberg received its first state award in 1958 as a Spätlese at the former Gräflich von Berckheim’schen Schlosskellerei.
Grape varieties and land use
For Hubberg, dry Riesling, Riesling Spätlese and Gewürztraminer Eiswein are documented. A Gewürztraminer Eiswein from 2003 was produced by the winery Carl Freudenberg. Former vineyard areas were also converted, as an ecological compensation measure, into a species-rich meadow with tree planting; the measure was implemented in spring 2014.
