Location and landscape
Hornfelsen is a single vineyard site in Grenzach, a district of the municipality Grenzach-Wyhlen in Baden. The wine-growing site is among the southernmost vineyards in Germany and forms the southernmost vineyard site of the Baden wine-growing region.
Exposure and geology
The vineyard faces south-west. The site is associated with air currents through the Burgundian Gate and a high level of sunshine. The vines grow on terraces on the lower slope below the Hornfelsen rock, a formation of shell limestone that was previously used as a quarry. In the regional area of the Dinkelberg, Rendzina and brown Rendzina soils from slope debris shape steep shell-limestone slopes.
Viticulture and wine
After the vineyard site had become overgrown, wine growing was resumed in Grenzach by a local initiative. From the grapes, a red Spätburgunder is produced, marketed as “Grenzacher Hornfelsen” or “Hornfelsenwein”. For the 2024 vintage, the wine was matured in wooden casks at the Bezirkskellerei Markgräflerland in Efringen-Kirchen.
