Location and size
Hornberg is a single vineyard site in the municipality of Framersheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the sub-region of Nierstein and the larger site of Petersberg. The vineyard area covers around 115 hectares and is located at an altitude of 170 to 200 metres above sea level.
Relief and soils
The vineyard site is oriented from the north-west to the west and forms a projecting part of a high plateau. The Hornberg area is described as having a height of around 280 metres. The soil consists of marl or Pelosol with calcium-rich, clayey deposits from the Tertiary sea.
Soil profile and wine style
The deep, calcareous clay has a high proportion of clay that can swell. It provides limited water storage available to plants, restricted permeability and aeration, a high nutrient and lime content, medium heat absorption, and makes rooting difficult. According to the official site profile, the soil is suitable for many grape varieties. It is associated with full-bodied, dense and rich wines with moderate acidity, a creamy texture, as well as ripe fruit and melon-like aromas.
Historical development
In 1969, the plots at Hornberg were consolidated and equipped with concrete paths. For the hot and dry year of 1947, drought damage was recorded in the vineyards at Hornberg.
