Site and Climate
Horn is a single vineyard site in the cadastral district of Nieder-Ingelheim of Ingelheim am Rhein, in the Bingen area of the Kaiserpfalz region in Rheinhessen. The wine-growing site lies at the foot of the Mainz Mountain above Ober-Ingelheim. The climate is shaped by the sheltered Rhine valley as well as the foothills of the Taunus and Hunsrück.
Orientation and Soils
The slopes face west; the terrain has a south-western orientation and a maximum incline of ten percent. The soils consist of limestone and rendzina, linked to tertiary marine deposits of a calcareous algae reef. They are shallow to medium-depth, very calcareous, stony and sandy-loamy, well aerated and heat-retentive, with limited water storage available to plants and restricted rooting depth.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Spätburgunder is the dominant grape variety and is classified as a VDP grape variety in Horn. In addition, other Burgundian varieties are named. The wines are described as aromatic and lively, with notes of citrus fruit, apple and gooseberry, which can develop into mango and passion fruit. A balanced acidity, mineral and chalky hints, depth and ageing potential shape the wine style.
History and Classification
The wine-growing site was first documented in 1570 under the name “am Horn”. The name refers to a projecting form of the mountain. Horn is designated as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
