Location
Honivogl is a former vineyard site in Spitz an der Donau in the Wachau in Lower Austria. The vineyard site lies at the foot of the Singerriedel; part extends into the adjacent Axpoint area. It faces south.
Soil
The soils consist of weathered gneiss and mica schist with a layer of brown earth.
Wine
Honivogl is planted with Grüner Veltliner. Weingut Franz Hirtzberger uses the name Honivogl as a designation for a Grüner Veltliner from the Wachau category Smaragd.
Vinification
For the wines of Weingut Franz Hirtzberger, a documented approach of the lowest possible intervention in the cellar is used. They are fermented in stainless steel and matured in traditional wooden barrels with a capacity of 30 to 50 hectolitres; this also includes the Grüner Veltliner Honivogl Smaragd.
