Location and Classification
Honigsack is an officially registered single vineyard in the district of Herxheim am Berg in the wine-growing region Pfalz, in the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area, Großlage Kobnert. In the vineyard register, the site is listed under the cadastral area of Herxheim with the vineyard number 820709. The issue for the 2024 harvest status shows 128.5 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Topography and Soils
Honigsack extends to the south and west of Herxheim am Berg and is bounded to the south by the Berntal. The site comprises several parcels with partly sloping terrain and different exposures. Described are tertiary limestone soils, calcareous loess loams and gravel-bearing material; in the parcels, limestone and clay alternate. Cooling air currents are considered characteristic.
Cultivation and Grape Varieties
Honigsack is farmed as a multi-parcel vineyard. The work is documented parcel by parcel at at least one winery operating there. The parcels are planted with Riesling and Spätburgunder; in addition, wines made from Grauburgunder are offered under the name Honigsack.
Documented Wine Styles
Honigsack Rieslings are documented as dry wines with pronounced acidity and citrus or green fruit aromas. Dry Honigsack Spätburgunder show a ruby-red colour, berry aromas and a soft tannin structure. A documented vintage from 2024 of the dry Honigsack Grauburgunder has 12.0 per cent alcohol, 5.9 grams of residual sugar per litre and 5.9 grams of acidity per litre.
Historical Classification
With the German wine law reform of 1971, the historical vineyard names of Herxheim were grouped into three single vineyards, including Honigsack.
