Hohenmorgen

Location and Topography

Hohenmorgen is located on the edge of Deidesheim in the wine-growing region Pfalz. The vineyard site lies on an elevated plateau at around 140 metres above sea level, with an altitude range of 130 to 160 metres above sea level. The south-easterly-facing plot has a slope of 4 to 12 percent and covers around 3 hectares; the area classified as a VDP vineyard site measures 2.72 hectares.

Climate and Soils

The sheltered amphitheatre is located in the foothills of the Haardt. An eastern sandstone wall borders the site and stores warmth, while the stony topsoil warms up quickly. The soils consist of weathered Buntsandstein (variegated sandstone) with sandstone rubble, loam and loamy sand. In addition, limestone rubble and calcareous inclusions have been documented. The calcareous material can retain water and is associated with the wines’ mineral structure.

Classification and History

Hohenmorgen is designated as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; in the VDP vineyard-sites profile, Riesling is listed as the classified grape variety. The site was first mentioned in 1828 and, in the first Bavarian soil assessment, was counted among the highest-rated wine sites in Deidesheim. The name combines the historical unit of land measurement “Morgen” with the elevated location of the plateau.

Wine and Ageing

Dried Riesling wines are documented as Grosses Gewächs. For its Hohenmorgen Riesling of the 2024 vintage, Bassermann-Jordan documented a selective hand harvest, gentle pressing and a must maceration time of more than 24 hours. Fermentation took place using vineyard yeasts at 70 percent in large wooden barrels and 30 percent in stainless steel; afterwards, the wine matured until bottling on the full lees.
