Location and Classification
Hörecker is a vineyard site in Kanzem in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer winegrowing region and in the Saar wine-growing region. The site lies within the Kanzemer Altenberg and is described by the winery as a small monopoly. The VDP lists Hörecker, Kanzem as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE.
Topography and Soil
The south-southeast-facing site is at around 240 metres above sea level and has a slope inclination of 89 per cent. The soil consists of Devonian slate with a high iron content. Weathered dark Devonian slate is described, as well as a high proportion of iron-bearing and volcanic rock.
Vines and Cultivation
The classified area covers 0.54 hectares. Riesling is the classified grape variety. According to the winery, the vineyard was never consolidated and has preserved its old terraces. The vines are more than 120 years old and yield around 10 to 20 hectolitres per hectare.
Wines and Maturation
Documented are dry Rieslings, Riesling Spätlesen, Riesling Auslesen and wines in the category VDP.GROSSE LAGE. The grapes are fermented spontaneously in stainless steel; the winery’s single-site wines mature in old Fuder casks.
