Höllenberg

Location and legal classification

The officially recognised vineyard is designated as Assmannshäuser Höllenberg in the Assmannshausen district. It belongs to the Rheingau and there is registered as an official single vineyard in the quality wine designation system.

Topography and soils

The site extends over approximately 46 hectares on a steep slope facing south-south-west, with an incline of roughly 30 to 60 per cent. The soils consist of stony, coarse-grained slate with loess loam and weathered components from Taunus quartzite.

Viticulture and history

The sun-exposed slopes along the Rhine are managed mainly for the production of red wine. Spätburgunder is the most important documented grape variety of the site, associated with red wines from this variety. Cultivation of red wine there has been documented at least since the 13th century.
