Location and Extent
Hölle is an officially registered single-vineyard site within the municipal area of Wonsheim in the Rheingrafenstein region and in the Bingen area of Rheinhessen. The vineyard area covers around 15 hectares, lies at an elevation of about 170 to 240 metres, and faces south.
Name and Soils
The name Hölle has historically been associated with a slight slope inclination. In 1522, the site is documented as being associated with the Helden. The described soils include loess over pararendzina as well as marl over pelosol. The calcareous, deep loess-pararendzina is loamy, rich in clayey silt, stores a lot of water, and offers good rootability. The marl-pelosol is a deep, strongly calcareous clay soil from clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary sea, whose drainage and root penetration are limited.
Wine Style
On loess-pararendzina, fine-fruited, refreshing wines are produced with moderate structure. The marl-pelosol component is combined with fuller, denser, fruit-accented wines with moderate acidity. For Scheurebe from the Wonsheim Höllen vineyard sites, clear, fine fruit, fresh acidity, a mineral finish and a medium body are described.
Grape Varieties and Ageing
Scheurebe, Riesling and Huxelrebe are documented for Hölle. For a Riesling from the site, small manual harvests of loosely-bunched grapes, organic cultivation, spontaneous fermentation and ageing in stainless steel are described.
