Location and classification
Hölle is a single vineyard site in the cadastral area of Wöllstein in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Bingen area and to the large vineyard of Rheingrafenstein. The official list of vineyard sites records the site under number 710513; for the 2024 edition, 68.3 hectares of planted vineyard area are given.
Relief and soils
Hölle is described as a light, or gentle, slope. Documented soil types are loess/pararendzina and marl/pelosol. The calcareous loess forms a deep, fertile clay soil with good water-holding capacity. The marl soil consists of deep, calcareous clay marl with springable clay and has limited drainage and aeration.
Historical references and wine
The wine site is documented in 1522 as „an den Hullen“ and in 1604 as „uff der Hellen“. A documented wine from the site is the dry white wine „Grauer Burgunder Wöllsteiner Hölle“ from the grape variety Grauburgunder.
