Location and classification
The vineyard site referred to as “Hölle” is Schiersteiner Hölle in the Schierstein district of Wiesbaden in the Rheingau. It is listed as a single-vineyard site (Einzellage) within the Rheingau wine-growing region. The name goes back to the historical term “Halde” for a slope or embankment area.
Soils
The soils consist of medium- to deep-rooting loess over Pliocene and Pleistocene gravels and sands. In some areas, floodplain soils are found in addition.
Wines
For the Schiersteiner Hölle, Riesling is documented. The wines are associated with mineral acidity and vegetative aromas. They present themselves at first as closed and develop finesse as they ripen.
A documented Riesling from the 2016 vintage from the Höhn estate was classified as dry and as 1st growth. It has 8.9 g/l residual sugar and 7.3 g/l acidity.
Designation
For a Qualitätswein (quality wine) with the name of a single-vineyard site, according to the Hessian wine regulations the specific wine-growing region and the associated municipality or the district must be stated. The Schiersteiner Hölle is assigned to Wiesbaden-Schierstein.
