Hölle

Location and classification

The Hölle is a legally registered single vineyard within the Großlage Abtey. It is located in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen, in the area of Bingen and within the cadastral district Sprendlingen.

Register and size

In the official vineyard register, the Hölle in Sprendlingen is entered under vineyard number 710118. For the cadastral district, 55.0 hectares of planted vineyard area are listed; the register status applies to the 2024 vintage.

Relief and soils

The name Hölle refers to a gentle hillside and was documented in 1592 as being in the Helweg. In the site, loess over pararendzina as well as marl over pararendzina occur. The loess soil is described as a calcareous, deep, fertile loam with clayey silt and good water storage capacity available to plants. The marl soil is a deep-seated, strongly calcareous clay soil with clay capable of springing and restricted permeability and aeration.

Varieties and wine style

In the Hölle and other named sites in Sprendlingen, among other varieties, Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Dornfelder and Spätburgunder are grown. A documented 2022 Ortega from the Sprendlinger Hölle is a sweet Prädikatswein of the category Auslese with 90 grams of residual sugar per litre and 8.5 per cent alcohol. Notes of peach, honey and linden blossom are described.
