Location and classification
Weinheimer Hölle is located in the cadastral district of Weinheim in the town of Alzey in the sub-region of Wonnegau of Rheinhessen. It comprises 74 hectares and is classified as an individual vineyard site, Hölle, within the collective vineyard site Sybillenstein.
Relief and soils
The vineyards are situated at about 230 to 290 metres above sea level and have exposures from east to south-west. The name Hölle refers to a slight slope; in 1331 the site was mentioned as uf der Helden. The regional profile lists loess-pararendzina as well as limestone-rendzina. For one parcel, a red weathered soil derived from Rotliegend sandstone with a high iron content is also described.
Climate and grape varieties
Weinheimer Hölle is described as a warm, south-facing slope with good ventilation of the grapes. Wines made from Riesling, Huxelrebe and Spätburgunder are documented.
Wine styles and ageing
From this site come dry Rieslings, dry Spätburgunders and an edel-sweet Spätburgunder. For the 2023 vintage, the information given includes a reduction in yield by halving the bunches, as well as manual leaf work followed by selective hand-harvesting. A Spätburgunder from the 2022 vintage was fermented with crushed grapes after complete or partial de-stemming and then aged for 18 months in new 500-litre tonneaux.
