Location and Classification
Hochberg is an officially registered single vineyard within the Großlage Liebfrauenmorgen in the Wonnegau and belongs to the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard register assigns the site to the Worms districts of Herrnsheim and Pfeddersheim.
Area and Soils
Under vineyard number 730507, the vineyard register lists 21.5 hectares of planted vineyard area in the cadastral area of Herrnsheim and 66.9 hectares in the cadastral area of Pfeddersheim. The Pfeddersheim portion rises on a small elevation north of the road between Pfeddersheim and Leiselheim. For Herrnsheim, loess-pararendzina and sand-regosol are documented; for Pfeddersheim, medium-heavy, deep and calcareous loam.
History and Grape Varieties
The Pfeddersheim place-name associated with Hochberg is documented in a charter of the Lorsch monastery dated 1 July 774. Later forms are Hoenberg, Hohenberg and Hochberg. For the site, Riesling and Spätburgunder are documented; dry wines from both grape varieties are proven.
Cultivation and Vinification
In the Pfeddersheim vineyards of the Pfannebecker winery, including Hochberg, the work aligned to the guidelines of organic farming includes manual vine pruning, leaf work and bunch selection. A documented Hochberg Riesling from the 2008 vintage was fermented spontaneously and matured for a longer period on the fine lees.
