Location and classification
The single vineyard Hoch, also known as Bodenheimer Hoch, is located in Bodenheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Sankt Alban grand cru in the area of Nierstein.
Topography
The vineyard plots lie on a slope with gradients of up to 35 per cent. The site is locally described as a high plateau near Mainz and is situated at 140 to 180 metres above sea level. The aspect ranges from south-east to east. The documented area comprises 63 hectares.
Soil
The soil consists mainly of loess over pararendzina. Documented is a fertile, deep, light loam soil with clayey silty components, a calcareous composition, a high capacity for storing water available to plants, a medium capacity for warming up, and good root penetration.
Vines and history
In Hoch, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder and other newer red grape varieties are grown. A documented wine from the site is a dry Riesling as a site wine and quality wine. The wine-growing area was first mentioned in 1629 under the name “auf der Höhe”.
