Relief and soils
The vineyards are located at around 150 to 240 metres above sea level and are oriented from south-east to south-west. The slope gradient is 15 to 45 percent. The soils are shallow to moderately deep, stony and characterised by weathered slate; locally, the proportion of slate is high. The site has good soil water availability; in some areas, there are deeper soils.
Grape varieties and wines
In Hitzlay, Riesling is grown and used for cuvée wines from single sites. The site is associated with mineral Rieslings which can be fuller depending on the depth of the parcels and the degree of soil weathering. The Kasel wine cooperative states that it harvests its grapes by hand and produces site wines from Hitzlay.
