Location and extent
The Freyburger Himmelreich is a legally registered wine-growing site in the municipalities or cadastral districts of Müncheroda, Zscheiplitz and Freyburg in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region. As of 31 December 2024, an area of 37.5912 hectares was officially recorded.
Designations and topography
Depending on the associated district, the site is also called Müncherodaer Himmelreich or Zscheiplitzer Himmelreich; all three designations refer to the same wine-growing site. For the Zscheiplitzer Himmelreich area, 150 to 220 metres above sea level, a slope gradient of 25 to 35 per cent and a south to south-easterly exposure are documented.
Soil and grape varieties
In the Zscheiplitzer Himmelreich, shell limestone lies beneath loess and loam. For the site, Riesling, Weißer Burgunder, Grauer Burgunder and Spätburgunder are classified. In addition, Solaris is grown, a fungal disease-resistant PIWI grape variety that is also used for a site-designated wine.
Wine style and processing
A documented Solaris from the Freyburger Himmelreich is produced as a sweet wine with fruity, complex aromas of exotic fruits. Wines from the Zscheiplitz area are described as having pronounced minerality and a fuller, more extract-rich character. In September 2025, around 8,000 kilograms of Solaris from about 0.5 hectares were machine-harvested there within roughly one hour and taken to the nearby cooperative winery, where the must fermented for about three days to make Federweißer.
