Location and Classification
Himmelchen, also known as Walporzheimer Himmelchen, is a German single vineyard in the wine-growing region Ahr. It lies within the municipality of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and, in the official register of vineyard sites, is assigned to the cadastral district of Ahrweiler.
Geography and Soils
The site is located in the valley floor between Walporzheim and Ahrweiler, in front of the Calvarienberg school complex. As a valley-floor site, it lies at around 110 metres above sea level. The soils consist predominantly of slightly stony, sandy slope scree loam and terrace gravel.
Vineyard Register and Grape Varieties
In the official register of vineyard sites, Himmelchen is listed as a single vineyard under number 110141 in the Walporzheim/Ahr valley area and within the Großlage Klosterberg. The officially recorded planted vineyard area in the harvest cadastre for 2024 was 9.7 hectares. Spätburgunder is the most important grape variety at about 9 hectares; around 2 hectares are accounted for by other varieties.
Wine Style and History
The site is described as producing full-bodied, rounded red wines with a fine character of fruit. According to historical accounts, the valley floor at Himmelchen was already expanded for viticulture around the middle of the 19th century. Parts of the former vineyard Domlay in the Heckenbach valley were assigned to Himmelchen in 2017.
