Location and Classification
The legally registered vineyard Burgwerbener Herzogsberg is a single site within the Qualitätsweinbau region Saale-Unstrut. The site is associated with Burgwerben, Schkortleben and the town of Weißenfels.
Topography and Vineyard Areas
The Herzogsberg lies on steep slopes above the Saale. From there, the view extends across the Saale valley; at the upper edge of the slopes, wine-vineyard huts stand. The 2024 vineyard directory lists 7.0401 hectares of planted vine area. According to their own statements, the Burgwerben-Kriechau winegrowing association cultivates around 5.6 hectares of this and grows eight grape varieties in its holdings.
History and Wines
Viticulture in the Burgwerben area has been documented since 1218. Historical sources referred to vineyard sites corresponding to the present-day Herzogsberg later as “Güldene Berge”. Documented wines from the site include dry Silvaner, dry Gutedel and dry Weißburgunder, as well as a semi-sweet Dornfelder rosé. Also mentioned are Portugieser, Dornfelder and Müller-Thurgau; other planted grape varieties include Weißburgunder, Silvaner, Gutedel and Kernling.
