Topography and soils
The vineyard is oriented to the south-east and has an average slope of 15 percent. The VDP site profile names barren Haardter sandstone as the soil; Von Winning also describes the vines of the Herzog as growing on sandstone and gravel.

For Haardter Herzog, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, Muskateller, Scheurebe, Rieslaner and Chardonnay are classified. A corresponding wine is the Chardonnay Haardter Herzog from Von Winning.
Style and origin of the name
Von Winning describes the intended style as elegant, natural and layered dry terroir wines. According to the winery’s own information, since 2008 it has carried out spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels and, where possible, fills the wines by gravity rather than using pumps. The name Herzog is documented as a derivative of a late medieval family name.
