Location and classification
Herrnberg is a registered single vineyard site in the district of Gau-Bischofsheim. It belongs to the Nierstein area within the winegrowing region Rheinhessen and to the Großlage Sankt Alban. The vineyard register lists it under vineyard number 720913, with 23.2 hectares of planted vineyard area in the 2024 harvest publication.
Topography and soils
The Herrnberg is described as a south-facing slope. The soils include loess-pararendzina with deep, calcareous loess, good water storage capacity available to plants, and good root penetration. In addition, marl-pararendzina occurs: deep, strongly calcareous clay soils from tertiary marine deposits with spring clay, as well as limited water and air permeability.
Grape varieties and wine styles
For the Herrnberg, Riesling and Muscatel are documented. Dry Rieslings and a semi-dry Muscatel are evidenced. According to Werther-Windisch, the Gau-Bischofsheim site was planted with old Riesling clones.
Name and history
The name Herrnberg is explained by the former ownership by a clerical or secular lord. A description of Gau-Bischofsheim from 1668 mentions vineyards in the Herr(en)berg and thus documents the designation in an early local usage context.
