Location and soils
The Herrenmorgen is referred to regionally as the Leistadter Herrenmorgen in Bad Dürkheim in the Pfalz. The documented vineyard area covers 72.1 hectares. The vineyard has sandy, calcareous soils: lighter sandy soils lie in the south, heavier limestone soils in the north. Parcels are located on a south-east-facing slope at elevations of up to 270 metres above sea level.
Name and history
The name refers to the Counts of Leiningen, who are described as lords of the Hardenburg and in the past owned vineyards at this site.
Grape varieties and wine styles
From the Leistadter Herrenmorgen, Riesling is documented as a site-designated wine. A dry Riesling is described as mineralic, structured and cool. Scheurebe is also documented as a sweet Spätlese with pronounced fruit character, mineral notes and lively acidity.
Vinification
For a documented Herrenmorgen Riesling, after a preliminary selection, healthy grapes were picked selectively by hand. The wine fermented spontaneously and remained on the fine lees until bottling. The documented Scheurebe was cold macerated before pressing; it was then fermented cool and temperature-controlled in stainless steel and developed on the lees until bottling.
