Location and classification
Herrengarten is a single vineyard that extends across municipality boundaries in the cadastral areas of Dienheim and Oppenheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. In the official vineyard register 2024, 9.7 hectares are recorded in Dienheim and 31.0 hectares in Oppenheim. As an official single vineyard, Herrengarten bears vineyard number 720521.
Soils and site
The soils consist of gravel, sand and loam, or Rigosol, and date back to ice-age fluvial deposits. They are of medium depth, stony and sandy-loamy; they drain and aerate well and store only a limited amount of water available to plants. Nutrient content is low, the reaction is neutral to acidic, warming potential is good and rooting potential is medium. In dry years there is a risk of drought stress.
Wine style and origin of the name
The profile of the site is orientated towards Pinot (Burgundy) varieties and is more suited to red wine than to white wine. It is characterised by herb-spiced aromas, a firm structure, freshness in combination with texture, a juicy palate character, density and ripening potential.
The name Herrengarten is traced back to ownership by a spiritual or secular lord. The Lords of Dalberg are considered possible historical reference persons.
