Location and landscape
The Herrenberg is locally known as the Oberschwarzacher Herrenberg and lies in the area of Oberschwarzach in the wine landscape of the Steigerwald between Oberschwarzach and Handthal. It is assigned to the Hörnle and is located below a protective, wooded area. Paths lead around the vineyard site and offer views of Oberschwarzach.
Soil and vines
At the documented site of an old vineyard, the soil consists of a clay-rich Pelosol developed from Gipskeuper. The underlying material from Unter- and Gipskeuper consists mostly of clay and siltstone. The 0.16-hectare plot is planted as a mixed planting and is farmed in an environmentally conscious and ecological manner.
Grape varieties and wine style
The mixed planting includes Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Traminer, White Elbling and Red Elbling. The wines from the old vineyard site are attributed with fullness, substance and mineral character by the clay-rich soil. A documented Silvaner from the 2023 vintage from the Oberschwarzacher Herrenberg was produced on Keuper soil.
Development of the vineyards
In Oberschwarzach, the vineyards underwent land consolidation from 1977 to 1982. The resulting vineyard area of 120 hectares also included the Oberschwarzacher Herrenberg.
