Location and landscape
The Herrenberg is a wine-growing site and a hill near Gerlachsheim, a district of Lauda-Königshofen in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg. The steep slopes face south to south-west; the estate also includes terraced plots.
Soil and viticulture
Vines grow on shell limestone. Winegrowing includes work in steep sites and shapes a terraced vineyard landscape.
Grape varieties
At the Gerlachsheim Herrenberg, among others, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Kerner, Bacchus, Spätburgunder and Riesling are grown.
History and wine law
The Herrenberg has a winegrowing tradition documented for centuries. A historic vineyard portal on the wine hiking trail bears the year 1732. The site belongs to Tauberfranken and thus to the protected winegrowing region Baden; wines from Tauberfranken may, on account of their historical Franconian affiliation, be bottled in the traditional Bocksbeutel. The cultivated areas of the Baumann winery at the Gerlachsheim Herrenberg have been certified as organic since August 2008.
