Location and classification
The Herrenberg is the Nußdorfer Herrenberg wine-growing site in the Nußdorf district of Landau in the Pfalz. It belongs to the Südliche Weinstraße district and to the Großlage Bischofskreuz. In the official wine-growing sites directory, it is listed under number 810112 with 406.8 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Soils and grape varieties
For the Nußdorfer Herrenberg, sandy loess clay and calcareous loess-clay soils with lime in the deeper subsoil, as well as in part a sandy surface layer, are documented. Riesling is represented in dry wines and feinherb wines. Other documented grape varieties are Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, Kerner, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Carménère, Sangiovese, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Barbera and Nebbiolo.
Wine styles
The documented wines include dry Riesling with fresh citrus and mineral characteristics, dry Müller-Thurgau, feinherb Riesling, Gewürztraminer with a sweet expression and dry red wines.
Cultivation and ageing
For Riesling from the Nußdorfer Herrenberg, consistent yield reduction, a yield limit of 60 hectolitres per hectare, hand-harvesting and careful selection at harvest are documented. For red wines, complete de-stemming, must fermentation in a wooden vat, daily punch-down, gentle basket pressing, malolactic fermentation and ageing in French oak barriques are used. Riesling is vinified gently and in part aged for several months in wooden barrels.
