Location and classification
The Herrenberg is located in the cadastral district of Niedermennig in the municipality of Konz in the Mosel wine-growing region, Saar area. The registered vineyard area covers 25.7 hectares. In the winegrowing site directory of Rhineland-Palatinate, it is listed as a single vineyard Herrenberg with the wine site register number 460230 within the Großlage Scharzberg.
Orientation, climate and soil
A documented upper section of the Niedermenniger Herrenberg is oriented to the south. An upper south-facing parcel is described as having long and warm ripening conditions, while another higher-lying parcel remains comparatively cool and is read later than the lower rows. The soil consists of slate with reddish fine-earth components and is also described as red slate.
Grape variety and wine styles
Riesling has been documented for the Herrenberg. The wines are produced as dry, fine off-dry, Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and Beerenauslese. A historical Mosel wine-growing map from 1868 shows the site near Niedermennig.
Cultivation and ageing
For a documented parcel, a loose canopy, shoot pruning and a limited yield of 30 hectolitres per hectare are given; the vines were about 35 years old in 2021. A documented Herrenberg Riesling was fermented slowly with natural yeasts and left on the fine lees until the summer.
