Herrenberg

Location and classification

The Herrenberg is a registered single vineyard site in Kasel in the lower Ruwer valley within the wine-growing region Mosel. The vineyard site is located on the steeply rising hillside wine-growing landscape around Kasel on the Ruwer.

Cultivation and grape variety

The Herrenberg is one of the best vineyard sites of the Erhard Scherf estate. Its slope and steep sites are cultivated in a nature-oriented manner. From the Kasel Herrenberg, Riesling has been documented.

Wine styles

Documented Rieslings from the Kasel Herrenberg include dry and gently off-dry high-quality wines (Hochgewächse) as well as Kabinett wines.

Historical and legal framework

For Kasel, medieval vineyard ownership by monasteries is documented. The place was mentioned in 973 as “Casella” in a confirmation in connection with the Oeren monastery in Trier. The Herrenberg is listed in the state vineyard register of Rhineland-Palatinate as a single vineyard site, in the official register of geographical designations for quality and Prädikat wines.
