Location and classification
The Herrenberg is located in Rheinhessen and stretches across the communities of Dienheim and Oppenheim. As the Oppenheimer Herrenberg, it is a single vineyard (Einzellage) within the Großlage Güldenmorgen and the local designation Oppenheim. The VDP classifies the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE with a classified area of 32 hectares.
Topography and soils
The site begins above Oppenheim near the Landskron and extends along a slope towards the south-southeast. It is exposed to the southeast, lies at an altitude of 140 to 160 metres above sea level and has a slope of around 35 per cent. The wind-sheltered slope enables strong sunshine exposure.
The soils include loess over pararendzina, as well as marl over pelosol. The main soil is described as calcareous marl with a comparatively high clay content. The deep, relatively poor soils lead to slow ripening of the grapes and offer considerable ripening potential.
Grape varieties and wine style
Riesling, Silvaner, Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder are mentioned for the Herrenberg. The wines from the site are described as distinctly mineral. From Herrenberg grapes, both dry and dessert-sweet wine styles are documented.
Documented vinification
For a 2025-documented Oppenheimer Herrenberg Riesling Auslese, fermentation with natural yeasts and ageing in a stainless-steel tank are stated.
