Location and Topography
Hermannsberg is a vineyard site in Niederhausen in the wine-growing region Nahe. The south-facing site lies at around 150 to 180 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of up to 40 per cent.
Climate and Soils
In the Nahe valley, cold air can flow away from the site. The reflection from the nearby Nahe increases the amount of sunlight in the vineyard. Hermannsberg is also considered suitable for the production of ice wine.
The subsoil consists of slate, which is overlain by a layer of loess. More than 100 years ago, melaphyre was brought into the vineyard as part of mining-related activities.
Vines and Classification
The site is planted with Riesling and is classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE. According to the VDP, the classified vineyard area covers 5.51 hectares. Gut Hermannsberg farms 5.28 hectares as its own property and thus 100 per cent of the site as a monopole site.
History and Wine
The former Prussian state winery in Niederhausen was founded in 1901; the first Riesling there was planted in 1903. Gut Hermannsberg cites 1907 as the first vintage for the Niederhausen Hermannsberg site. Riesling Hermannsberg GG is described as dry.
