Location and classification
The Hemsberg is a legally registered single vineyard in Bensheim within the winegrowing region Hessische Bergstraße. It belongs to the Großlage Bensheimer Wolfsmagen.
Topography and viticulture
The Hemsberg rises to 262 metres and overlooks the vineyards in the Bensheim area. It is one of the five single vineyards farmed by winegrowers from Bensheim. In Bensheim, there are around 150 hectares of vineyard area.
Climate of the region
The Hessische Bergstraße has a regional average annual temperature of about 12 °C, more than 1,700 hours of sunshine and around 690 millimetres of rainfall. The Odenwald provides protection from strong north and east winds.
Wines and grape varieties
A 2024 Riesling from this site with the style description feinherb (off-dry) is documented. Riesling is the leading grape variety of the Hessische Bergstraße; the regional wines are characterised as fresh and full-bodied, with white wines increasingly developed into fine, fruity style profiles. The winegrowing association of the Hessische Bergstraße has existed as an independent German winegrowing region since 1971.
