Location and classification
The Trier vineyard Hammerstein corresponds to the single-vineyard Avelsbacher Hammerstein in Avelsbach, in the Aveler valley of the Trier district of Kürenz. The site belongs to the wine region Mosel and to the vineyard area of Avelsbach in Trier.
Topography and geology
Avelsbacher Hammerstein is described as a monopoly, held in sole ownership, and as a steep-slope vineyard. The vineyard slopes in the Aveler valley were laid out between 1901 and 1911. Characteristic are Rotliegend slate as well as dark, fine-grained Devonian slate.
History and cultivation
The Avelsbach estate was established in the late 19th century as a state model viticulture and wine storage operation. On a partnership plot of the University of Trier, voluntary work such as tying in the canes and harvesting the grapes was documented. For the Avelsbach operation, the switch to organic viticulture was announced from 2014.
Grape variety and wine styles
Riesling is documented for Avelsbacher Hammerstein. Among others, Kabinett semi-dry, Spätlese, Auslese, Eiswein, Trockenbeerenauslese and Riesling Sekt Brut are evidenced. A 2020 vintage of Riesling Sekt Brut was produced using the traditional method, aged on the lees for 40 months and disgorged in June 2024.
